Yellow Rust: The Enemy That Travels on the Wind and Strikes Before You See It

It doesn’t need contaminated soil or infected seeds – a breeze carrying its spores from one field to another, even from one country to another, is enough. Yellow rust on wheat is one of the most dangerous fungal diseases in Syria, capable of destroying more than 80% of your production if not controlled at the right time.

How Do You Know Your Field Is Infected?

  • Yellow or orange circular pustules on wheat leaves
  • Arranged in longitudinal rows parallel to the leaf axis – which is why it’s also called “stripe rust”
  • Affects leaves, stems, sheaths, spikes and awns

When Does It Spread Fast?

The disease thrives under these conditions:

  • Temperatures between 10–15°C with large day-to-night fluctuations
  • High plant density and high relative humidity
  • Excessive nitrogen fertilization
  • Wind carrying spores over long distances

How Do You Manage and Control It?

Prevention – Start Before It Appears:

  • Plant disease-resistant varieties
  • Early sowing reduces the risk of infection
  • Reduce excessive nitrogen fertilization and irrigation
  • Lower planting density to improve airflow

Treatment – Act the Moment First Symptoms Appear: The fungicide Folicur at a rate of 600–800 ml/hectare is the most effective option – but the key to success is immediate application at the first sign of infection, before the disease reaches the flag leaf.

  • Monitor weather conditions continuously throughout the growing season
  • Inspect your field regularly, especially during cold and humid periods
  • Don’t wait for the infection to spread – every delay multiplies your losses

⚠️ Remember: Combining prevention with timely chemical control is what protects your season and secures your harvest.
